Exploring the potential of digital currencies in feminist economics
Crypto-Knitting Circles is a collaboration between artist Ailie Rutherford and researcher Bettina Nissen to explore the use of new technologies for a potential feminist community cryptocurrency in the context of Govanhill in Glasgow. Inspired by a shared interest in feminist economics and the potential of new technologies to disrupt established power structures, we will draw on the format of the “knitting circle” to learn from each other, knowing that everyone brings vital knowledge to the circle.
Using tangible materials to convey and understand the potential, issues and complex processes involved in these new technologies, we will be exploring the behaviours of a currency and shifting value perceptions working with feminist exchange project, Swap Market in Govanhill. This project involves a series of workshop activities, artist interventions and community knowledge exchange over the course of 2019.
